Location: Bordeaux, France or remote from one of the 5 INS countries (Frequent Travel to INS Countries – Up to 6 Months per Year)

SUMMARY

Join us in bridging the digital divide in education for refugees and communities hosting them. As an ICT & Field Technology Specialist, you will ensure the seamless operation of Instant Network Schools, configuring and maintaining critical learning technology in some of the most under-resourced environments. This role involves extensive travel (up to six months per year) to support INS schools across six African countries. You will work closely with technical teams, field staff, and key stakeholders to optimize system performance and build local tech capacity for programme sustainability.

You will be part of the core INS team and work in a cross-functional team from Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR, reporting directly to the Global Programme Lead. You will preferably be based either in the Bordeaux area (France) or in one of the 5 INS countries (DRC, Egypt, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania).

This position is a full-time consultant role. It is currently advertised for the period from April 2025 to March 2026 with an opportunity to extend contract duration.

RESPONSIBILITY

Technology Deployment & Support

  • Install, configure, and maintain INS hardware and software
  • Provide technical support to ensure optimal performance of INS systems
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve hardware and software issues
  • Oversee spare stock management in country and at European Hub Offices

Capacity Building & Training

  • Train local staff, improve internal processes, guidelines and manuals for sustainable technical support
  • Build and maintain a knowledge base and training documents for INS systems
  • Support teachers and local teams in effectively leveraging technology in the classroom

Field Operations & Travel

  • Travel to INS-supported countries for on-site setup, maintenance, and technical support
  • Provide real-time troubleshooting and remote support when necessary
  • Collaborate with field teams to ensure smooth deployment of INS technologies

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain detailed logs of technical activities, issues, and resolutions
  • Prepare reports on INS system performance, incidents, and improvements
  • Recommend enhancements based on field feedback and technological advancements
  • Review existing and implement standard operating procedures for INS equipment setup

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree or equivalent experience in a field related to Information Technology/Computing/Networking/Data science
  • Proven experience in ICT support, system configuration, and equipment maintenance
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively (up to six months per year)
  • Demonstrated experience and skills online and in-person delivery of training for adults
  • Familiarity with Linux server administration (preferably Red Hat family distributions)
  • Familiarity with Ansible or a willingness to learn
  • Excellent teamwork and problem-solving skills
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)

Desirable Qualifications & Competencies

  • Knowledge/understanding of educational technology
  • Knowledge of AWS EC2 management
  • Familiarity with front end web development/design
  • Familiarity with Elasticsearch/Kibana and using data to drive decisions
  • Excellent project management and ability to prioritise
  • Good listener and passion for sharing knowledge and build capacity of others
  • Beneficial languages: French, Arabic, Portuguese and/or Swahili
