How KivuHub is empowering tech innovation in the DR. Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a country with immense potential, but also many challenges. Despite its rich natural resources, it faces political instability, poverty, and lack of infrastructure. However, there is a growing community of tech entrepreneurs who are determined to change the status quo and create solutions for the country’s problems.
One of the organizations that is supporting this community is KivuHub, a virtual tech accelerator and hub that provides training, mentoring, networking, and funding opportunities for tech startups and companies in the DRC. KivuHub was founded in 2023 by Eliud Aganze, a tech enthusiast and social entrepreneur who wanted to create a platform for tech innovation and social impact in the eastern region of the country.
KivuHub’s vision is to make the east of the DRC a “Silicon Kivu” by creating opportunities leading to development by using new technology of communication. KivuHub works with different sectors such as education, health, agriculture, and e-commerce, and helps tech entrepreneurs develop their skills, validate their ideas, and scale their businesses. KivuHub also works with girls and women who are in tech and helps them to develop their skills and confidence.
One of the ways that KivuHub achieves its mission is by partnering with various stakeholders in the region, such as universities, NGOs, local authorities, and other hubs. KivuHub is also part of the AfriLabs network, a network of innovation centers across African countries that aims to build a community around the rapidly emerging tech hubs in Africa⁴.
Some of the successful startups that have emerged from KivuHub’s programs include:
- EduTech, an online platform that provides access to quality education and learning materials for students and teachers in rural areas.
-
AgriTech, a mobile app that connects farmers with buyers and provides them with information on market prices, weather, and best practices.
-
HealthTech, a web-based platform that connects patients with doctors and pharmacies and provides them with health tips and reminders.
-
E-Commerce, an online marketplace that allows users to buy and sell goods and services online and pay with mobile money.
KivuHub is not only a hub, but also a community of tech enthusiasts, innovators, and changemakers who are passionate about making a difference in the world with technology. KivuHub invites anyone who is interested in joining this community to visit their website², follow them on social media, and sign up for their newsletter. KivuHub also welcomes any support from donors, investors, mentors, and partners who want to contribute to the growth of the tech ecosystem in the DRC.
KivuHub believes that technology is a powerful tool for social change and that the DRC has the talent and potential to become a leader in tech innovation in Africa and beyond. KivuHub is proud to be part of this journey and to support the next generation of tech entrepreneurs in the DRC.
