The Impact of the Wildlife Ranger Challenge on Rangers
The Wildlife Ranger Challenge has to date had a huge impact on the welfare of thousands of rangers across the continent.
Provided equipment – such as ranger uniforms (boots, trousers, socks, t-shirts), patrol kit (backpacks, sleeping bags, rain gear, first aid kits), GPS units for field teams, radio equipment (VHF radios, satellite communication devices), binoculars and torches for monitoring and surveillance, ballistic vests for ranger protection, camera traps for wildlife monitoring, solar charging kits for off-grid operations, smartphones and rugged computers for data collection, drone equipment for aerial surveillance and tracking devices (LoRa trackers, GPS trackers).
Supported K9 teams – Wildlife Ranger Challenge funding supports at least five critical canine units across Africa, enhancing anti-poaching efforts in key regions, including Zimbabwe and South Africa. The units protect endangered species such as African wild dogs, rhinos, and elephants by tracking poachers and detecting illegal wildlife products
Provided vehicles and fuel – Thanks to the Wildlife Ranger Challenge funding fuel and running costs, multiple patrol vehicles and boats have been maintained, enabling rangers to cover hundreds of thousands of kilometres annually to protect wildlife. With thousands of litres of fuel provided, patrols are more effective, response times are faster, and poaching threats have been significantly reduced.
Funded intensive training – Since the inception of the challenge, this funding has strengthened ranger capacity across Africa by supporting 41 organisations in specialised training for anti-poaching, human rights, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, first aid, fire management, drone operations for aerial surveillance, coxswain training for water-based patrols, horse-mounted ranger units, and specialist human-wildlife conflict response teams.
By investing in professional development, essential equipment, and operational logistics for community rangers and law enforcement officers, it has contributed to the professionalisation of the sector.
This unique approach integrates cutting-edge technology, advanced field skills, and strategic capacity building, ensuring rangers are better equipped, more effective, and increasingly resilient in safeguarding endangered wildlife and critical ecosystems.
Improved living quarters – Since the inception of the challenge, this funding has delivered critical investments in ranger accommodation and infrastructure. It has provided essential housing, field accommodation, and subsistence support for rangers and joint patrol teams in places such as Okomu, Nigeria, and key wildlife habitats like Kidepo, Uganda and Queen Elizabeth National Parks, Uganda. It has also enabled the construction and refurbishment of ranger camps, hangars, and training facilities, ensuring frontline teams are equipped to operate effectively in remote and high-risk environments.
Supplying subsidised life, in-duty and medical evacuation insurance to over 7,000 rangers, under the Ranger Welfare & Standards Initiative
Improved Performance: The increased capacity of rangers has resulted in a greater than 30% average increase in the number of snares collected year-on-year. This growth reflects the impact of enhanced training, infrastructure, and expanded patrols, strengthening efforts to combat poaching and protect wildlife.
